Carla Green's Thanksgiving Reflections: Family, Faith, and the Blessings of Plainview, AR As Thanksgiving approaches, Carla Green takes a moment to reflect on the tapestry of memories that have woven through her life, the cherished moments with family, and the warm embrace of Plainview, AR. Carla's most memorable Thanksgivings are painted with the hues of love and togetherness, set against the backdrop of Mamaw and Papaw Barnett's house. Those gatherings, filled with laughter, shared stories, and the aroma of a bountiful feast, hold a special place in Carla's heart. However, the dynamics shifted with the passing of her mother, and family gatherings have become more infrequent. The memories of those precious times serve as a reminder of the importance of family and the joy that resonates when loved ones gather. When asked what she is most thankful for in her life, Carla's response is a testament to the core values that anchor her. "All of my children and grandchildren," she shares. It's the ties that bind generations together, the laughter echoing through family gatherings, and the warmth of shared moments that Carla holds most dear. Having been a Plainview, AR, resident for 15 years, Carla reflects on the sense of community that has defined her time in this town. What makes Plainview special to her is the feeling of being treated like family since the day she arrived. The genuine warmth and hospitality of the community have made Plainview not just a place to live but a home where connections run deep. As Carla embraces Thankful Thursday, she takes a moment to express gratitude for everything God has blessed her with. It's a sentiment that echoes through the layers of her life—from the richness of family to the welcoming embrace of a community that values each member as family. In the spirit of Thanksgiving, Carla extends a heartfelt invitation to share any additional thoughts or reflections. Her gratitude, it seems, knows no bounds. As she looks forward to another Thanksgiving in Plainview, Carla Green carries with her a heart full of memories, a deep appreciation for the family she holds dear, and a profound sense of gratitude for the blessings that continue to unfold in her life.

Loyd Miller's Thanksgiving Reflections: Family, Faith, and the Blessings of Plainview, AR Written by Fabrizio Perez As Thanksgiving approaches, Loyd Miller takes a moment to reflect on the rich tapestry of memories that have shaped his gratitude and the welcoming embrace of his community in Plainview, AR. For Loyd, the most memorable Thanksgiving transports him back to the warmth of his grandmother's home. In those cherished moments, the family would gather around the table for a hearty Thanksgiving dinner, basking in the love and joy that filled the air. The day unfolded with shared laughter and stories, extending into the evening when a special tradition took place – decorating his grandmother's home for Christmas. The lights twinkled, and the Christmas tree stood adorned, marking the onset of the festive season. This tradition, etched in time, became a symbol of family unity and love, especially during the holiday season. When Loyd contemplates what he is most thankful for in his life, his priorities are clear. "First and foremost, my Lord and Savior," he expresses with unwavering faith. His spiritual foundation serves as a guiding light, shaping his perspective on life and gratitude. His family, a blessing from above, is another source of immense thankfulness. In the midst of profound expressions of gratitude, Loyd adds a touch of humor, acknowledging his love for a classic Thanksgiving treat—pumpkin pie. Having been a Plainview, AR, resident for a little over two years, Loyd's connection to the community goes beyond mere residency. As a pastor, he has been an active participant in the community for five years, contributing to its spiritual well-being and fostering connections. Despite the relatively short time spent as a resident, Plainview has become a significant part of Loyd's journey, both personally and professionally. The essence of what makes Plainview special to Loyd lies in the friendly atmosphere that greeted him and his family when they first moved to the community. The warmth of the welcome and the commitment the community demonstrates resonate deeply with Loyd. It's this sense of community, a commitment to one another, that makes Plainview more than just a place of residence—it's a home filled with heart. As Loyd prepares to celebrate his third Thanksgiving in Plainview, he carries with him a tapestry of memories, a strong sense of gratitude, and a deep appreciation for the friendly atmosphere that has become a hallmark of this community. With each passing year, Loyd Miller looks forward to creating new memories and continuing to contribute to the rich and welcoming tapestry of Plainview, AR.

Sherry Smith-Wooten's Thanksgiving Reflections: Family, Faith, and the Blessings of Plainview, AR Thanksgiving is a time to count our blessings and reflect on the moments that have touched our hearts. For Sherry Smith-Wooten, her most memorable Thanksgiving takes her back to 2011, a year filled with love and new beginnings. It was the year when the "kiddos" joined their family, and that Thanksgiving was a remarkable milestone. The day was made even more special by the creation of "hand" turkeys, a craft that now serves as a cherished symbol of togetherness and growth. Sherry's heart overflows with gratitude as she considers the many blessings in her life. Her unwavering faith in God provides guidance and solace, while the love of her family surrounds her with warmth and support. Fur babies bring joy and companionship, and good friends are the pillars of her social circle. Their presence makes every day a little brighter. Good health is a gift that enables Sherry to embrace life fully, and the ability to work and provide for her loved ones is a blessing she treasures. Weekends offer moments of rest and rejuvenation, and the freedom to make choices and shape her destiny is a privilege she never takes for granted. Forgiveness and the opportunity to learn from mistakes have been powerful forces in Sherry's life, helping her grow and become a better version of herself. Sherry has been a proud resident of Plainview, AR, for an impressive 47 years. Plainview holds a special place in her heart, and what she's most thankful for about her hometown is the sense of continuity it offers her family. Her children have had the unique opportunity to grow up in the same town where she did, despite the changes that have occurred over the years. The community's deep-rooted connections and the familiarity of neighbors watching over their children as they play outside provide a sense of support and safety that's hard to find elsewhere. As Sherry gathers with her loved ones this Thanksgiving, she is reminded of the true essence of the holiday—to appreciate the love, connections, and the enduring bonds that enrich our lives. With a grateful heart, she embraces the blessings of family, faith, and the beloved town of Plainview, AR, that has played such a significant role in shaping her life.

So, here's a heartfelt shoutout to all the sponsors, vendors, performers, and attendees who made this event truly remarkable. A big shoutout to Kelsey Lisenbey and her sister-in-law, Emily Lisenbey, for their fantastic performance at the Frontier Day parade, singing the National Anthem with such angelic voices that truly embodied the spirit of freedom. The Kids Corral was a true paradise for our little festival-goers. The duck pond, balloon darts, bouncy houses, bean bag toss, pumpkin patch, and more kept the children entertained and delighted throughout the day. Seeing those smiles and hearing their laughter made it all worthwhile. Our entertainment vendors brought the heat with an adrenaline-pumping obstacle course and a bucking mechanical bull. It was an absolute thrill to watch folks conquer these challenges and cheer them on. The excitement in the air was evident! Speaking of entertainment, let's talk contests. First up, a big shout out to Mr. Miller and Evie Zack, who've been crowned as Mr. and Ms. Frontier Day. But that ain't all, Grayson Tippy is our Little Mr. Frontier Day, and Bella Johnson takes the crown as our Little Miss Frontier Day. They've all got bragging rights for at least a year! In the women's division, our champions are Lisa Brooks and Amanda Horn, clocking in at 2 minutes and 54 seconds, and in the co-ed division, Trey Hardman and Amanda Horn teamed up for victory in 1 minute and 56 seconds. Our food trucks dished out mouthwatering catfish, chicken, shrimp, and burgers that had everyone’s taste buds dancing. And for those who needed a sweet fix, the lemonade stand and soft serve ice cream truck were there to save the day. Nothing says summer like a cold, refreshing treat! We appreciate them sharing their musical gifts with us! From homemade baked and freeze-dried goods to homemade crafts and artisan vendors, there was something for everyone. • Frontier Day Kids Corral and More!

Written by: Michelle Vales Frontier Day is right around the corner, and I’m thrilled to share all the exciting activities we’ve lined up for the whole family! First, we can’t have a festival without bouncy houses, which are always a hit with the little ones; I can already picture them bouncing away with big grins on their faces. Now, let’s talk about the Kid’s Corral activities. This year, we are bringing out the big guns! We have a Cowboy Bean Bag Toss that’s sure to bring out everyone’s inner child. Test your aim and toss them bean bags like a real cowgirl or cowboy. Who can resist trying their luck at Apple Tree Balloon Darts? Pop those balloons and show off your sharpshooting skills in a fun and safe way. Spin the wheel and try your luck at Wheel of Fortune; this always adds a touch of mystery and excitement. Hunt for a Pumpkin in a Haystack—a fantastic autumn-themed challenge. Get your rings ready and aim for the targets. Ring Toss is a classic, a game that never gets old. Aeroblast Foam Shooting with air pop guns and foam balls? Count me in! This is going to be an absolute blast, one that kids are going to love! And, of course, catching little rubber duckies in the Duck Pond is perfect for the littlest festival-goers. Outside the Kids Corral is the Dunking Booth—this is a splashin’ good time waiting to happen! We thank the Chickalah Fire Department for allowing us to use their dunking booth this year. We already have one or two brave souls lined up to be dunked. And we hope to find more willing victims (I mean volunteers) to take the plunge! Proceeds go towards the Sharing and Caring program in Dardanelle—Serving all Yell and Pope counties. If anyone is interested in being a dunking victim or needs more information, please contact us for all the dunk-tastic details. The Boy Scouts will be at Frontier Day with their fun and innovative “Jail and Bail” fundraiser. Pay to have someone jailed for a few minutes and then decide whether to bail them out or leave them there to serve their time. It is all in good fun, and I’m sure folks will have a blast participating and supporting such a good cause. All in all, Frontier Day will be a fantastic event with something for everyone. This year will be filled with laughter, fun, and memorable moments for the whole family! We look forward to seeing you there. 🤠🎉 Have you attended a past Frontier Day in Plainview? • Interview with Joe Dishongh (Joe, the Barber), Frontier Day Grand Marshal.

Written by: Michelle Vales Loyd Miller and I had the honor of sitting down and talking with Arkansas native, Joe Dishongh, last Tuesday evening. Most of you know him as Joe, the Barber. He has clearly left an eternal mark on this community, and recognizing him as Grand Marshal for the upcoming Frontier Day parade on September 23, 2023, is a testament to the impact he has made over the years. We were most curious about his life in Plainview as “Joe, the Barber,” with the stories he heard, the laughs he had, and the memories he made over the years. It was fascinating to hear about his journey from graduating from Fourche Valley High School (Rover, AR) in 1966 to becoming a skilled Master Barber with 56 years of experience, of which all 56 years were spent right here in this building in Plainview, AR. His passion for this community and his trade shined through in every word he spoke. Joe graduated high school on a Friday night, and that next Tuesday, he enrolled at the school of Eaton Barber College in Little Rock, where it took him nine months (1800 hours) to receive his Barber license. On February 22, 1967, after receiving his Barber's license, Joe moved to Plainview to serve as an apprentice under Master Barber Mr. Fred Blackstock, who retired in 1970. The way Joe described his apprenticeship was both inspiring and a testament to his dedication, and the fact that he has been able to maintain a successful and beloved barber shop for over five decades is absolutely remarkable. His connection to his customers goes beyond mere haircuts—it is a testament to the welcoming and friendly atmosphere he has cultivated in his shop. Joe has a sign in his barber shop that displays special cuts, buzz cuts, and flat top prices starting at $0.50. When asked if those were the prices in the good old days, he laughed and said someone had bought that sign for him and brought it up here. Fifty-six years ago, Joe started out charging just $1.00 for haircuts. It was interesting to hear about the changes in pricing over the years—from just the $1.00 he charged to his current rate of $10.00, which is not much, but it is a true reflection of how times have changed over the years. Joe had lots of kind and uplifting stories, but he always came back to say, “I’ve been very blessed over the years to have been able to work in this community and have the friends and business that I have. The Lord has been very good to me.” Joe is in his third generation of cutting kids' hair. He talked about his wife of 30 years, who was the school secretary for 25 years, now retired; her brother, Danny Ray Owens, the photographer who takes beautiful landscape photographs around town; and his beautiful children and grandchildren. You could tell by the smile on his face and the twinkle in his eyes, as he spoke of his family, how much he is devoted to them. He talked about all his good customers and friends, the ones he still has and the ones he has lost. If you do not know Joe, you would never guess how tenderhearted he is. The passion he had as he spoke of his customers really shined through. He was even getting a little choked up as he spoke of the four customers he had recently lost. It was heartwarming to hear about the relationships he has built, some of whom have become like family over the years. Halfway through our conversation, Loyd asked Joe if he had cut hair for anyone famous. Although Joe could not think of anyone, we know he has. Joe spoke of a time when he was a little boy. His dad, who was from Gravelly, went to school with Arthur Hunnicutt’s dad. Joe said that he and his dad drove up to the Hunnicutt home. They had an old, beautiful two-story plantation home there in Gravelly. Arthur Hunnicutt (1910-1979), known for his portrayal of humorously wise and witty rural characters, had just come home for a visit. We laughed as Joe described his experience of meeting Arthur. He said, “He scared me. I had never seen anyone with a beard like his. So, I got in the floorboard of the truck, and I squalled, and I bawled.” Joe has much admiration for the Hunnicutt family. He said they were common people and if it were not for his father, he never would have gotten to know Arthur. However, Joe never got to cut Arthur's hair. Joe’s anecdotes about Arthur Hunnicutt's visit and the memories tied to this town's past offer a glimpse into a time that shaped his perspective. The stories he shared about Plainview's history and the changes it has seen over time, such as the introduction of city water, the construction of the Old Frontier Town, and the impact of events such as Frontier Day, painted a vivid picture of the town's evolution. One of Joe's happiest memories of Plainview was when they got the Harold Blalock City Park. The worst memories that came to his mind were when Plainview began losing businesses in town. He said seeing the town and the community go down was a tough time not only for him, but the community as well. His admiration for the community's spirit during tough times and the way the community comes together in the face of challenges reflects the genuine bonds formed among its residents. Back in the day, when Joe came to Plainview, there were around six to seven grocery stores and three service stations. To hear Joe talk about it, Plainview was a happening place. It was nothing for Joe to open before or by seven o’clock in the morning and close at nine o’clock at night. On Saturday nights, he would close at eight o’clock. Joe reminisced about one Saturday when he opened before seven in the morning and did not stop for lunch or anything else. Before he knew it, it was fifteen minutes to eleven when he finished his last haircut. He could not believe he lasted all day without even eating. However, Joe still made it to church on Sunday morning. Speaking of church, we asked Joe where he attended church. That was an interesting conversation. See, Joe is a Methodist, and his wife is a Free Will Baptist, but according to Joe, they do not have any problems with that. They attend the Hilltop church over there off Brush Creek across Lake Nimrod. His mother-in-law went there years ago, but the church eventually shut down. After a while, his mother-in-law got it going again, and now Joe and his wife just love this little church. In Joe’s building, there used to be a Lawyer and a Realtor, and upstairs was a Dentist. The building still has the same door and latch as it did 56 years ago. It was quite amusing to hear about the haircut mishaps with kids—it seems like some things never change, no matter the era! Joe’s been using the same chairs ever since he bought the building. These chairs are now ninety-plus years old. What is more exciting than getting a haircut at Joe’s barber? Loyd asked. Getting to sit in a 100-year-old barber chair! When asked about retirement, Joe said he gets asked that question three or four times daily. Most of his customers say, “You better not retire, Joe. What are we going to do?” He never directly answered the question, but we don’t look for Joe to retire anytime soon. His reminiscing about the old building, the antique chairs, and the challenges faced during the COVID-19 pandemic all highlight the resilience and adaptability that have been key to his enduring success. His willingness to embrace new generations while retaining the essence of tradition is truly commendable. It was great to hear Joe reminiscing about the past, from the changing prices of haircuts to the evolution of the town itself. These stories offered a unique window into our town’s history, which is all-to-often forgotten. Becoming the Grand Marshal is a fitting tribute to Joe’s contributions, and it is clear he is excited for the honor. His participation in the Frontier Day parade is sure to be a highlight of the festivities, and it is a chance for the community to celebrate him and the positive impact he has had on Plainview. As the conversations gradually came to a close, we asked Joe if he would consider being one of the judges for our Mr., Ms., Little Mr., and Little Miss Frontier Day Best Western Outfit contest at Frontier Day, and his answer was completely understandable. Joe smiled softly and kindly declined as he prioritized his customers' feelings and experiences. He has clearly built strong relationships with them over the years, and it is clear their satisfaction means a lot to him. We want to thank Joe for sharing his story and experiences. It was a pleasure listening to his journey and learning about the impact he has had on his community over the years. His enthusiasm and dedication are truly inspiring. Congratulations, Joe, on this well-deserved honor! Do you have a story or experience with "Joe, the Barber" you would like to share? Please comment below. We would love to hear your stories.
